What is a mystery scene?

A mystery scene usually refers to a scene or sight that makes people feel mysterious or hard to understand. This term may be used to describe natural landscapes or artificial landscapes, such as artworks or buildings. Usually, a mystery scene makes the viewer feel confused, curious, or doubtful, and they need to think deeply to understand its meaning and purpose.

For this series of photographs generated by AI, I drew inspiration from the vibrant statues and sculptures found in local temples throughout Taiwan (scroll down to see reference photos). These works often depict the horrors of hell and provide guidance for leading a virtuous life. Despite their serious subject matter, the scenes can appear comical and out of place within their surroundings, creating an eerie and enigmatic atmosphere that challenges viewers to reconsider their perceptions of aesthetics.

The term "mystery scene" is inspired by the title of music album by Taiwanese indie band Mong Tong.
